Garmin enters the action cam market with Virb

The market action cam starts from the bottom but now it’s big names such as Sony, JVC, Panasonic and now Garmin, a leader in the development of devices for satellite navigation. Today the American brand launches the new Virb family of cameras for sports which debut with two rugged Full HD models and enhanced features such as GPS and Wi Fi controls. The body design in the style of other Garmin devices and unlike GoPro tip of an elongated Contour style. The outer covering is already rugged therefore does not require additional protection to protect the electronics from water, dust and shock.

On board there is also a mini display Chroma with backlight 1.4″ which is crucial to ensure the proper alignment of the recovery and can also be used to play back movies or browse through the options. Many accessories can be purchased separately. There is a case to take underwater shots up to 5 atmospheres and a large amount of coupling systems for each surface, means of transport or discipline including an adapter that supports mounting systems from third parties.

Among the specifications of the two models we find a sensor capable of capturing 1080p video and 16MP photos, removable battery with 3 hours of autonomy, support for the ANT plus wireless protocol and software for video editing. On the Elite version we find a GPS, accelerometer, altimeter and Wi Fi support to control the cameras remotely via Android and iOS as in models of countour or GoPro. Virb and Virb Elite GPS will arrive in late September at the list prices of 299 € and 399 €, practically aligned with the GoPro Black Edition and Silver Edition, currently the two reference products for the segment action camera.
