Are Snapchat Smart Glasses in the Works?

A new version of Google Glass is said to be in its developing stages and will be offered to Google’s business users. However, rumours have also surfaced that the famous Facebook and Twitter app alternative, Snapchat is also cooking something up.

These speculations can be traced back to the developments in the company with the 2014 acquisition of Vergence Labs, a start-up that manufactures glasses able to record footage seen by the user. Also, an eye wear designer also joined the team in November of the same year.

Lauryn Morris, the designer, had collaborated with Zac Posen and Michael Kors for the designs of their frames. Also, in the early part of 2015, a team of software engineers who specialise in machine learning and computer vision were also included in the research team of Snapchat. These specialty areas are significant in the creation of HoloLens and Google Glass.

Another factor that made the rumours quite a stir was the joining of the former recruiter from the Xbox and HoloLens, Mark Dixon. It was reported that Dixon mentioned in one of his social media accounts that he is presently working on something, related to augmented reality. This was an indication that there is a product to look forward to. The company also hired Eitan Pilipski with a background in augmented reality for glasses and smart phones.

Although the company has remained silent about these rumours, the issue has not died down. It will also be remembered that in 2013, Evan Spiegel, the boss over at Snapchat told the media that the company does not see the probability of creating an augmented reality app for glasses.

Snapchat has already been known as a social networking app that allows users to share photos and videos with approximately 100 million users a day but the people behind the company focused on improving their products. In connection with this, one of the apparent smart specs of this supposedly product is to allow users to send files and videos that are self-deleting. If this will push through, this will be warmly embraced by social networking enthusiasts.
