PlayStation 4 | AMD confirmed hardware and affordable price

Yesterday Sony unveiled the new PlayStation 4, one of the most important and successful consoles for the Japanese giant, which arrives after seven years from its predecessor. A launch comes after a year full of gossip and a curious policy of bluff that has the illusion that the house would have expected the first move by Microsoft and then launch a counterattack. It is obvious that this did not happen.

In the announcement yesterday all the highlights of the new platform were presented with the exception of two elements: the shape of the console (for the boss Shuhei Yoshida “the console is just a box”) and details of the hardware under the chassis, but for which we know will be very closely related to that of the PC game of the medium-high market today. As rumored for some time the heart of the console will be all AMD. Sony will provide both the architecture CPU that the GPU. It will all be integrated on a “monolithic” chip which consists of 8 Jaguar cores and a mysterious GPU of 1.84 teraflops.

The structure of the memory is rather different from that of the typical hardware from PC. We have in fact 8GB of GDDR5 shared for a total of 176GB/s bandwidth. Few details also on storage of which we only know that it will be “large” and given to a local hard disk of magnetic technology. To tell you the truth it is a lot. It’s true that AMD is not able to provide the same performance as Intel but on the front GPU gets along quite well and at least until the exit of the “super-GPU” GeForce GTX Titan – that alone will cost as much as two PlayStation 4 – has always been able to offer very competitive products in all segments of the market. Such hardware is perfectly adequate for the performance leap over the previous generation.

PlayStation 4 will arrive in November in a very accessible price, only $ 429, but it is not yet clear whether it will launch a synchronized for all or only for the Japanese market as what happened in 2006 for PS3.
